  History of Prairie Park

After construction of the McDonald’s restaurant in 1988, the City received 7.5 acres of land. It sat vacant until 1996, when Story City Trees Forever was granted permission to make the area into a Prairie Park.

In the fall of 1996, as part of a Living Roadway Trust Fund Grant, $4,180 worth of seed was purchased. The Story County Conservation commission planted 50 lbs. of seed (5 lbs. of Savanna Mix, 30 lbs. of medium site mix with short grasses and 15 lbs. of wet site mix) containing 109 varieties.

In May and June, 1998, (2000) 4.5” potted native wild flowers (37 different varieties) were planted at various locations throughout the 7.5 acres of Prairie Park.

In June 2000, 5’ wide trails were established and mowed throughout the Prairie. A new Prairie Park identification sign was also installed by Story City Trees Forever.

In July 2000, a new Gazebo was constructed on the site to over look the Prairie.  In summer of 2003, a new Stone Terrace was constructed off the West side of the Gazebo.  New sidewalks, drinking fountain, waste containers and lighting are also now in place.

Several other improvements are planned for Prairie Park.  Please return to the park from time to time, check out our progress and enjoy the prairie.
