is pleased to present the following exhibitors, artists who are
re-creating from the past and creating for the future.
Welcome to the "Norwegian Knitting Circle" --new for 2010. You will meet Arnhild Hillesland, Barb Ribik, and friends creating beautiful sweaters, mittens, and maybe some socks with wool from Norway. They'll be glad to show you the stitches and tell you about a new shop they are opening soon. Yarn and a few other items will be for sale.
Arlene Field of Ankeny is a familiar name to Sons of Norway members. Arlene has served as District 1 Board member and has been elected to the position of Treasurer. Arlene will demonstrate the art of Hardanger embroidery which originates in the Hardanger region of Norway. She enjoys doing it and teaching it. Visitors will enjoy watching the designs appear from the fine, measured stitches.
Connie Rassmusson, of rural Story City, learned the art of making potato cakes and lefsa from her father, Mervin Teig. Connie and her family will demonstrate making potato cakes until all her ingredients are gone. The Heritage Hall crowd buys them warm from the griddle! Connie serves a thriving market with "hard lefsa"--sometimes called Hardanger lefsa, or West Coast lefsa. Historically, many Story City immigrants came from this area and brought hard lefsa in their trunks. Connie's lefsa is fresh, however.
Ann Strootman - Inspired by her passion for family history, Ann has dressed her collection of heritage dolls with handcrafted bunad (folk costumes) from various regions throughout Norway and Sweden. Ann has also designed folk costumes for American Girl dolls.
Mike Smuck is a local guy who has been making and marketing Scandinavian pastries the "good old-fashioned way" since 1990, using recipes from his maternal grandmother. In 1999 the Smucks introduced their lefse, kavring, and krumkake, all of which will be for sale. "Smuck's Kringla Kitchen" will demonstrate making krumkake.

and specializes in the Telemark style of rosemaling. With her husband, Helga offers custom work and special orders from their home. Helga’s art is found in many a home locally, and also homes around the country.
Larry Lubbert will demonstrate his woodcarving, which combines the Scandinavian style with a style he first learned at Boy Scout Camp. Larry's Gnomes have branched out into other caricatures-Trolls, Santas, Snowmen, Christmas decorations, pins, and magnets. Wife Doris does most of the painting, but she has also starting carving pins and magnets in the woodcarving workshop at their home in Decorah.
Nadine Dobbe, an Ames resident with roots in Danish Elkhorn, IA, Nadine enjoys demonstrating the traditional Danish arts of "paper-cut" and folding paper starts. Woven heart baskets and woven paper starts are intrinsically Scandinavian. Woven heart baskets adorn Danish Christmas trees, and woven paper starts are often referred to as Danish, German, Moravian, or Swedish. European embroidery paper crafts will also be for sale.
